Overview of “Folkstyle” Wrestling Rules and Scoring If you have never been to a wrestling match it is difficult to understand the scoring involved. Here is a quick overview to help you figure out what's going on.
The object of the sport of wrestling is to put your opponent on his back -- to pin your opponent. The offensive wrestler (top position) tries to stay on top of his/her opponent and secure the pin. The defensive wrestler (bottom position) tries to reverse positions and gain the offensive position in order to secure a pin. A pin (or fall) is when you put your opponent on his/her back with any part of both shoulders or both shoulder blades of your opponent in contact with the mat for two seconds. When you pin your opponent, the match is over and you are the winner. If nobody gets pinned, the winner is the wrestler who has scored the most points during the match.
Individual Match Scoring: The referee wears red and green wrist bands and awards points to the wrestler wearing the correspondingly colored ankle band. There are five ways to score points in a wrestling match:
Dual Meet Team Scoring Fall (pin), Forfeit, Default, Disqualification = 6 team points Technical Fall (getting ahead of your opponent by 15 points ends the match) - 5 team points Major Decision (winning the match by 8 - 14 points) - 4 team points Decision (winning the match by fewer than 8 points) - 3 team points |
| Attention All Youth Football Parents! Have you ever considered wrestling as a sport for your child. Here are three reasons to further consider the Mansfield Youth Wrestling Program. 1. Benefits that wrestling provides to an athlete There are obviously numerous benefits that wrestling provides to an athlete. A wrestler is forced to have a strong core, good hips, a sturdy stance, and knows how to use his body in the most functional manner possible. There is no better sport that teaches kinetics and body movement quite like wrestling, which makes it a great parallel for football. The offensive side of wrestling quite literally translates into the defensive side of the ball in football- taking down an opponent; and the defensive side of wrestling quite literally translates into the offensive side of the ball in football- preventing your body from being taken down. |
